University students plan to take £3,000 worth of possessions
12 August 2011
UK students are planning to take almost £3,000 worth of possessions with them to university this year, according to a survey by the National Union of Students (NUS) and Endsleigh insurance.
In addition to clothes and musical instruments, the survey revealed that students carry more than £1,000 worth of gadgets, including smartphones, tablet PCs and laptops, with them each day. The data also indicated that many students wrongly believe that these expensive items are covered by their parent’s home insurance.
In reality, many policies will not cover items when they are taken away from the home and stored in shared accommodation.
Although it is advisable that students take out adequate insurance for their property whilst at university, it is also important that young people take extra precautions when it comes to laptop and tablet security. In order to reduce the risk of valuable laptops and tablets being stolen in the first place, students would be wise to invest in laptop security cables or laptop lockdown systems to secure their machines whilst working in their rooms or in the library.
