IT industry must become more energy efficient
25.02.2011
More than three quarters of IT professionals are still not addressing the issue of energy efficiency, Microsoft has revealed today.
Rob Bernard, Microsoft’s chief environmental strategist, has told the Guardian that more than 80 per cent of IT professionals are not doing enough to reduce energy consumption. Bernard citied behavior, and not technology, as the route of the problem, with most IT professionals not actively monitoring and driving energy reduction.
According to Microsoft, the first step to tackling the problem is to encourage IT departments, estate facilities departments and financial officers to work together, as IT managers do not pay an organisation’s energy bills.
Laptop charging trolleys in the Mentor™ range from LapSafe® Products feature new PowaSave™ technology, specifically designed to improve energy consumption when charging laptops or netbooks. This highly intelligent system senses when power is no longer required and goes into ‘stand-by’ mode, reinstating power for Data Transfer operations as required by remote ICT users (DTM model only).
