St Peter and St Paul’s CE Primary School pupils are game to learn

Local youngsters run games-based learning workshop at world educational technology exhibition

17 January 2012

Lincolnshire youngsters travelled to the capital on Wednesday to showcase how they use games consoles in class.

Media savvy pupils from St Peter and St Paul’s CE Primary School, in Burgh-le-Marsh, led an interactive workshop at London’s BETT Show, the world’s largest educational technology exhibition, to demonstrate how they use electronic games to boost their maths and literacy skills. The games-based learning event was held on the stand of mobile ICT specialist, LapSafe® Products, to enable teachers to discover how other schools utilise innovative technologies.

Alongside their Headteacher, the group of year 6 pupils revealed to educators how they use the Nintendo DSi to practice daily maths challenges, assess their performance and work in groups. Teachers attending the pupil-run workshop also found out how the children employ the gaming device to communicate with each other through picture messaging, and even got to try out the console for themselves.

The young presenters are part of their school’s Digital Media Champions, a team of children who help to inform teachers and pupils in neighbouring schools about new technologies. The youngsters currently demonstrate a variety of digital media that they make use of in lessons, including film making and visual literacy, with their teachers embracing ICT to support and strengthen learning since 2009.

Mark Exley, General Manager at LapSafe® Products, was delighted to offer teachers the chance to learn something new at the on-stand event. He said: “As a trusted education brand, we have always believed in doing our bit to share best practice and expertise. Not only has today’s workshop been tremendous fun for both us and the pupils, but together we’ve hopefully been able to give educators an opportunity to take away some tips to use in their own schools.”

Sarah Smith, Headteacher at St Peter and St Paul’s CE Primary School, was on hand at the event to explain how her pupils benefit from games-based learning. She said: “Our drive to be innovative with technology to engage our children reaps its reward in the positive attitude, risk taking and enjoyment within lessons at our school. Children are at the forefront of this work, with our Digital Media Champions leading training developments and pupils setting and monitoring their own targets. It has been the most significant step in developing our curriculum and inspires everyone within our school.”

In addition to learning how electronic games can be used to stimulate lessons, group-work, record assessments and measure against targets, teachers also got to hear about how St Peter and St Paul CE Primary School uses the new portable USB Charging Case from LapSafe® Products to charge and store their gaming devices. The pioneer of the UK’s first ever laptop storage and charging trolley, LapSafe® Products has been providing the education sector with safe, secure and value for money solutions to manage mobile ICT for more than a decade.
