Government to provide £300m for extra primary school pupil places

Schools Secretary Ed Balls and Schools Minister Vernon Coaker have announced together with the next phase of the Building Schools for the Future Programme that £300 million will be provided to secure extra primary school pupil places in local authorities across the country. This is not new money, but money which have become available because of the flexibility in other programmes.

Of this £300 million pounds, £270 million will be provided to build permanent classrooms and facilities across 34 local authorities facing exceptional growth in the number of four and five year olds. The £30 million remainder of the money will be available for local authority areas which did not apply, but which might be eligible under revised criteria.
